Learning Goals

Last week our learning goals entered around describing things to prepare us for sorting.
Today the students were discussing and completing work around sorting buttons by colour.  This was a review for the SK's but new for the JK's who did struggle with the process of sorting their buttons.

Things you can do at home:
- ask them to describe objects (shiny, soft etc.)
- ask them what is the same & what is different about pairs or groups of objects
- help them sort toys, buttons or other household items by colour (continue sorting by size & shape when they have a good understanding)

P.S. Tomorrow is Red Day so everyone is invited to come to school dressed in red and can bring in an object that is red!

Treasure

Thank you to all those parents who sent a small object to school with their child. We are still completing our activity so if you have not sent a small object to school (a button, bead, stone etc.) you can still do so tomorrow.

As well if your child has brought home their treasure (because they haven't had a chance to complete the activity) please be sure to keep it in their backpack so they can use it to complete the activity tomorrow.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Independence

Independence is extremely important for tour child's personal growth and development.  Your child is growing, changing and developing & needs freedom to explore and do things on their own.

your child is capable of doing many things on their own or with guidance from you.  They do not need (and should not be reliant on you) to completely dothings for  them: like getting dressed in the morning, writing their name, putting things away.  They should even be able to help out with chores like setting the table or sorting laundry.  Yes, they need guidance from you but that should be in the form of verbal directions, showing them how (and then having them do it) & encouragement.

We are helping to foster this independence at school but it must also continue at home.  Please give your child the freedom & encouragement to do things on their own.  You will be surprised what they are capable of.  If you always do everything for your child they may cry or complain at first but remain firm & they will quickly learn to follow your directions & try it on their own.  This will only help them become stronger and more capable people now & in the future.

Treasure

This week the students are learning to describe objects and to begin to sort them by the same attribute (colour, shape, size etc.).

Therefore, please send a small object to school tomorrow (a button, a bead, a stone, a clothespin etc.) so they can participate in the treasure activity.

Also, there was a mistake on the monthly calendar we sent out.  Curriculum Night is Thursday September 26 at 6:00pm.  We apologize for the mistake & we look forward to seeing you all there.

Borrow a Book

We have started our borrow a book program to help develop the love of reading with your children.

Students have each selected a book to take home & read with you.  You may keep the book for one night or two and then you must return it to school.  When they bring their book back they will be allowed to select a new one to take home.

Please make sure the books are all kept in good condition.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Friday

Tomorrow is dress down day for the whole school.  Therefore, students can wear clothing of their choice as long as it is school appropriate.

We look forward to seeing the students tomorrow in their everyday wear! :D

Lunch

Every day the students have a morning snack, lunch and optional afternoon snack.  It is important that you send a healthy & complete lunch (like pasta, soup, chicken nuggets, rice etc.) as well as at least 1 snack for the morning and at least 1 drink.

Due to nut allergies it is very important you DO NOT send Nutella or other foods containing any type of nuts.

Also, please provide the necessary fork or spoon to school for your child.  If you are purchasing pasta please make sure you send a fork to school as it is not provided.  Drinks are also not provided with the hot lunch.

Thank you for your cooperation :)

Today

After the students settled in this morning the day went very smoothly with everyone having a great time!  We started the day by finding our names, we sang & clapped along with some nursery rhymes, learned the name & sound of the letter Aa (ask your child to see if they remember) & did many other fun things!  A couple of children even told us that they loved us!  All in all a very good day!
