June Calendar

As summer approaches the classroom can get very hot.  Please dress your child in appropriate clothes for the warmer weather & send a hat & sunglasses for outdoor play.

Thank you to all the parents who helped supervise on out trip to the Kortright Center - it was a lot of fun!

In language we are continuing to focus on rhyming & word families.  In science we are continuing to learn about insects and will be completing the life cycle of a butterfly.

In math we will continue to learn about time: first, next, then, last and before & after.  As well we will start to talk about money specifically Canadian Coins.

The Senior Kindergarten students will be having a small graduation ceremony on Thursday June 20th in their classrooms. Please check the paper copy of your class's calendar for your class's time.

Kortright Center

Our trip today to the Kortright Center was fun, educational & tiring.

We explored forests & marsh land and learned about & found insects - ants, beetles, dragonflies, Mosquitos, ladybugs, bees etc.

The students were able to practice & extend the learning we have been doing in the classroom into the real world.  We will continue using all that we have learned and complete butterfly life cycles over the next few days.

Please ask your child questions about insects to reinforce their learning at home!

Starter Questions:
- how many body parts do insects have? Can you name them?
     (3 parts - head, thorax & abdomen)
- how many legs do they have?
(6 legs - on the sides of their thorax)
- what else do they have?
(2 antenna, 2 eyes, 4 wings if they can fly)
- what are some jobs they do?
(Pollinate, compost, recycle, eat bad bugs etc.)
- what are some types of insects?
(Ladybug, ant, grasshopper, butterfly, dragonfly, mosquito, fly, bees, Beatle etc.)
- where do they live?
(Everywhere but they like grass, trees, flowers etc.)

Rhyming

We have started to focus on rhyming & word families (ex: at, cat, mat, sat, fat ...).

Rhyming is a difficult but important skill to learn.  Therefore, we have started to send a rhyming bag home for extra practice at home.  Please make sure you use the bag the night it is sent home & send the bag back to school after using it so everyone can have a turn.

Vegetable Plants

A couple of the classes planted vegetable plants to learn about seeds & plants.  They are learning that plants need water, soil & sun to grow!

These are the plants in Mrs. Mancino-Grossman's & Mrs. Furtado's room!  We had to use Popsicle sticks to hold them up!  We're hoping to have vegetables soon!

Learning Goals

This week we will be starting to learn about insects to prepare for our trip to the Kortright Center in a couple of weeks.

As well, we will be beginning our unit on rhyming words.  A rhyming bag will begin to go home shortly to extend your child's learning outside the classroom.

As we have introduced all of the letters & sounds we will be focusing on reading & making words for the rest of the year.

Please continue to practice reading with your children at home to strengthen their reading skills.  It is recommended that students entering grade 1 be at a grade 1 reading level in September to help them succeed in their new classes.

Spring Gallery

If you were not able to make it to the spring gallery then you missed out on a wonderful evening.  The entire gym was filled with beautiful pieces of art created by the students in every grade, as well as by our very own Nick Biagini who is a very talented painter.

The paintings up for auction were amazing and all found new homes by the end of the night!

Here is a very brief snapshot of what you missed.  If you would like to see more than you'll have to be sure to join us next year!

Field Trip

Tomorrow is the last day to bring in your money & forms for the field trip on May 29th.

We recommend all students attend the trip. If your child does not come on the trip they must stay home on that day as there will not be anyone at school to supervise them.
