Outside play

Playing outside is healthy, fun, and part of the curriculum. It encourages curiosity, physical education & safety practices, large motor development, and socialization & play with others.

We go outside to play every day which can be difficult when children are not dressed appropriately for the weather. Therefore please make sure you send your child to school with a warm jacket, snow pants, hat, mittens, and boots.

Also, having a change of clothes at school is helpful in case they get wet when outside.

Counting

As your child continues to learn new and more difficult concepts in math their counting skills are being put to the test.

For many of the concepts we work on, especially measurement & simple addition, it is very important your child is able to count a group of objects. Not being able to count a group of objects correctly can hurt your child's confidence in their abilities or keep them from grasping other concepts (like addition).

When you practice counting with your child make sure they:
- are pointing to each object they count
- assign only 1 number to that 1 item (not counting 1,2,3 when still pointing at the same object)
- count each item only once (have them line up the objects or move them to the side to remember what they have already counted)
- don't skip any numbers or objects

Spending the time to strengthen your child's counting skills will go a long way in assisting them learn new strategies & mathematical concepts.

Weekend Practice

This weekend practice measuring things around your house using everyday items.

You could measure how wide a pillow is with pencils, or how long a sock is with small building blocks, or how many hands tall a chair is etc.

Success Criteria to keep in mind when measuring:

I will be successful if I . . .
- line items up end to end on both sides
- count items correctly
- say/state what I used to measure.

Example: This chair is 10 HANDS tall or this sock is 5 BLOCKS tall
